R v Hennessy ( 1989) 2 All ER 9, (1989) 89 Cr App R 10

The defendant, who was a diabetic was charged with taking a car without consent whilst disqualified. His defence was that he was in a hyperglycaemia state which was caused by failure to take his insulin.


Held :  Hyperglycaemia ,which is a condition in which there is an excessive amount of blood sugar level  in the human body. This was an internal factor which was triggered by his diabetes. 

Therefore the correct defence should be Insanity and not Automatism. "The kind of external factors the law required would be something like a blow to the head, or an anaesthetic."
